# Chats

> Ask questions about your figures in plain words

A chat is a conversation with TaxLayer about your data. Type a question; TaxLayer looks things up in your documents, myDATA and bank, shows each lookup as a grey line (*myDATA — 14 results*), then answers with headings and tables. Under the answer, clickable follow-up questions.

**All plans.** Each message costs 2 AI credits. Chats are personal — colleagues don't see yours.

## Starting one

* The **+** next to **Chats** in the sidebar, or the composer on the Home page.
* Type and press Enter (Shift+Enter for a new line).
* TaxLayer names the chat from your first message.

The **model** menu offers *Auto* (TaxLayer's model) plus any AI keys your organisation has connected. The **/** button opens your saved prompts.

## Managing

The ⋯ menu on a chat row in the sidebar has **Delete chat**. There is no rename.

## When it stops

* *You've reached this month's AI usage limit. It resets on …* — the organisation-wide monthly ceiling. Buying credits doesn't lift it.
* *You're out of AI credits…* — buy a credit pack or upgrade. See [Plans and billing](https://tax-layer.mintlify.site/account/plans-and-billing.md).

## Client portal

Contacts can chat too, from **Chats** in the portal. Their chats see only their own company's data and use their own monthly allowance of 100 credits.
