# Income & Expenses

> Income, expenses and the difference, as myDATA reports them

Businesses find this in the sidebar; firms see it as a tab on each client.

![Income & Expenses page showing Total bank balance, myDATA income, myDATA expenses and Income minus expenses cards](https://mintcdn.com/tax-layer/zf_-pMztTsnhR3DV/images/income-expenses.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=zf_-pMztTsnhR3DV\&q=85\&s=bae32d91e843c8702febf404a39bbbfe)

Income & Expenses: the four cards, each with its own time range

## The four cards

* **Total bank balance** (business only) — the latest balance of each bank account, added together, with money in and out over the last 30 days. Shows *N/A* until you upload a statement.
* **myDATA income** — all income documents reported to myDATA for the period, after credit notes, before VAT. The same figure as myDATA's own statistics, retail sales included.
* **myDATA expenses** — all expense documents reported to myDATA, before VAT, payroll and fixed assets included.
* **Income minus expenses** — exactly the difference of the two. Negative means a loss for the period.

Each money card has its own time range: **This month**, **This quarter**, **Year to date**, **Last 6 months**, **Last 12 months** or a custom range. Choose **Make default for this page** to apply a range to every card. The default is last 12 months.

The dotted tail on each chart is the current month, still filling up. The *myDATA data as of …* chip above **More detail** is the sync time behind every figure on the page.

Click a card to open the month-by-month breakdown with the counterparties behind each month.

## More detail

Below the cards, with its own date picker:

* **Revenue growth** — change between the last two finished months.
* **Active customers** — distinct VAT numbers you invoiced. Retail sales don't count as a customer.
* **Revenue mix** — retail share versus your largest invoiced customer.
* **Revenue by customer** table and the monthly chart.
* **Cost-to-revenue** — operating expenses as a share of revenue.
* **Surplus before payroll** — revenue minus operating expenses, with lines that walk it back to the myDATA result (payroll, depreciation, fixed assets, adjustment entries).
* **Expenses by category** or **by supplier**.

Inside any drill-down, **Ask AI** opens a panel where you can ask about that figure in plain words (one AI credit per question).

## If it says "No myDATA credentials configured"

Add the codes: businesses under Settings › Organisation, firms under Edit Client › Finance & Tax. See [Connect myDATA](https://tax-layer.mintlify.site/getting-started/connect-mydata.md).
